Laser Drilling is the process of repeatedly pulsing focused laser beam on a material to create thru-holes.

What is Laser Drilling?

Laser drilling is the process of repeatedly pulsing focused laser beam on a material to create thru-holes. It is one of the few precision metal technologies that can produce high-aspect-ratio holes, which meet many industrial demands that cannot be achieved by other technologies.

Laser Drilling has developed considerably in recent years and is applicable for almost all conceivable materials, including various metal and ceramics. Not only 2D, but also 2,5D and 3D applications are possible at a wide range of material thicknesses.

(1) Drilling with single pulse

This is the most basic drilling mode: a single laser pulse is fired at a single location, which is why it is also referred to as Single Pulse Drilling. The laser beam is stationary relative to the product. This mode is in particular suitable for very thin materials.

(2) Percussion drilling

Laser beam is pulsed at one specific spot of a material as well in this mode. However diameters of laser beams are different throughout the process (approximately 0.1 to 1 mm), which in the end changes the sizes of the holes drilled.

(3) Trepanning

Trepanning starts from a basic single pulse drilling process by drilling a hole on the material. Once it drills a hole in the material, it moves in an increasingly large spiral diameter to further cut the hole until the correct hole size has been created.

(4) Drilling on the fly

A laser pulse is constantly moving and cutting holes in the product. In this mode the laser beam is moving relative to the product.
